The Ministry of Justice has this week confirmed that 86 courts will be closing further to the government’s review of the current system.
A response document to the proposals on the changes Response to the proposal on the provision of court and tribunal estate in England and Wales has set out the Government’s position following the consultation, through which there has been much criticism of the approach of closing court centres.
Further to the 64 sites which the government intends to close (as per the consultation), we understand now that a further 22 court closures will take place.
Shailesh Vara, Justice Minister, said:
Court closures are difficult decisions. Local Communities have strong allegiances to their local courts and I understand their concerns.
This, alongside increased court fees, will do little to calm those who opposed the closures, with many now left with greatly increased distances to travel should they need to attend court.
